How to use Ritual Spell Oils in Pagan Magic & Witchcraft

Ritual Oils, Spell Oils, Conjure Oil, Healing Oils and Essential Oils can be found in most any witch’s cupboard. Their use in spells, magic and healing date back to ancient times and in the 21st Century, the use of these types of spiritual oils can play an important role when working with a particular intent such as love, money, protection or healing. As well, these oils are used in sacred ritual, ceremony, initiations and wiccan sabbat rituals. They can be used to anoint crystals, gemstones, altar tools, jewelry, talismans and are a staple when performing candle magic spells.

There are a lot of spiritual oils on the market today, some handmade, some factory made, some made with pure essentials, and some made using base synthetic oils. Some are crafted with wise and knowledgable magical intent, some made with minimal knowledge or intent, worse, no real magical intent at all. The goal is to seek out the most powerful all-natural oils you can find from a reputable practitioner or witchcraft supply store you trust. Or you can try your hand at crafting your own oils. I tend to stay away from intentional “perfume” oils as these oils are usually always made using synthetic based fragrances which rip the very essence and intent from the work at hand. Preferably you want to use oils that are handmade, with intent, charged with intent, and oils that are crafted with all-natural ingredients and pure essential oils and/or absolutes. These are available through reputable witchcraft shops (like White Magick Alchemy), witches or healers.

Most handmade Ritual Spell Oils are blended using specific ingredients to harness a particular intent and may include herbs, flowers, roots, crystal gemstones, and essential oils indicative to a particular intent, like success, luck, or finding your soul mate. Pure essential oils and all-natural ingredients are key relative to any intentional ritual spell workings. In magic, and with the use of natural ritual spell & spiritual oils, we are calling upon the spirits of these sacred plants to aid us in our magical workings, remembering that these gems of nature are the quintessential life force of aromatic botanicals, also known as the “soul” of the plant. Use them wisely and with respect. These are gifts that we have been given to help us on our quest for spiritual knowledge allowing us to tap into the magical world of universal intentional energy.

How to anoint candles with Ritual Spell Oils and creating your magical intent for Candle Magic Spells:

Anointing, dressing or conditioning candles during ritual spell workings – The purpose of anointing a candle is to establish a psychic link between it and the witch (you) though a primal sensory experience. By physically touching the candle during the anointing process, you are charging it with your own personal vibrations. At the same time you should be concentrating on your intent, allowing your energy and intent to flow into the oil and candle you are anointing. In essence, the candle is becoming an extension of the witch’s mental power and life energy.

As an example, depending upon what you are doing or what intention you are working with, let’s say money for instance, you will want to use a green ritual spell candle (green represents money as red represents love, as black represents banishing, etc). I explain more about this in my Candle Magic – How to Perform Intentional Candle Spells & Rituals with Color Magic blog post. When anointing a candle you first determine and harness the intent. In this case we are working with money drawing so we want to anoint (apply) a money drawing type oil (Prosperity, Success, Money Drawing, Luck, etc) to the candle in a clockwise direction. Why clockwise you ask? Because you are working with constructive magic. You are working to achieve something, you are working to improve something, you want things to turn to your favor. You always want to anoint spell candles in a clockwise (or deosil) direction when working towards a specific goal with positive intent, purpose, and to achieve positive results. When working with banishing, reversing, removing, you want to work in the opposite direction (widdershins). Deosil is clockwise, widdershins is counter-clockwise (in “witch language”). At the time you are anointing your spell candle, you can incorporate your spell chant at the same time as you are anointing the candle. Or, place the anointed candle in a heat safe candleholder and proceed with your ritual/spell chant afterwards. Whichever way works best for you is the way you should incorporate your chant.

While concentrating on your magical intent, imagine that that candle is a psychic magnet with a north and south pole. Place the oil on your forefinger and rub the oil between your forefinger and thumb. Holding the candle in the middle, rub the oil in a clockwise (deosil) direction from the middle of the candle upward to the top of the candle. There are a couple of approaches for anointing the bottom half of your candle. You can start at the bottom, working your way up to the middle, working in a clockwise direction (this is my personal preference), or you can anoint from the middle of the candle and work down (as above, so below). Or you can start the anointing from the bottom of your candle and simply work upwards towards the top of the candle, remembering to be applying in a clockwise (deosil) direction or counter-clockwise (widdershins) direction depending upon your intent.

Other uses for Ritual Spell Oils:

Ritual Spell Oils are also used to anoint the body during magical intentional workings. When working with a specific intent its not unusual to want to carry the magic and continue manifesting your intent as some workings take time to come to fruition and you need to basically hold vigil for a period of days, weeks or even months to manifest the final result. Spell oils can be anointed upon the body much like a perfume, and in most cases they smell pretty fantastic too. Unless its a powerful banishing oil loaded with an natural herbal fusion of garlic and not so pleasing herbs indicative to that specific intent. You might want to pass on that. But do remember to always test a bit before on your palm or wrist first as pure essentials can cause sometimes cause a skin reaction. Its fairly rare as most spiritual oils are safely diluted for safe use.

Other random items that some will anoint are door knobs, telephones (you want someone to call or not to call), talismans & charms, jewelry, crystal gemstone jewelry, money, coins, wands, besoms, vehicles, your familiar, the list is endless really. Be creative and think outside the box! After all, its your magic.

Ritual Tools can also be anointed with magical oils to heighten their power and effectivness. You might wish to cleanse any new ritual tools you bring to your altar or magical space especially if the tool has been previously used. You may wish to anoint the corners of your altar, or anoint your altar in sacred ritual by dabbing the oil in five points creating the pentacle symbol.

Crystals can be anointed to charge, consecrate, cleanse or empower. It is very important to know the structure and hardness of your gemstones before anointing them with oils, as some crystals and gems should never come into contact with water or oils. Also make sure you research the crystal(s) you want to anoint as the oil can cause discoloration once absorbed. For example Selenite, Jet, natural stones like Malachite, Azurite, natural unpolished stones, these are gemstones that should not be exposed to water or oils. But you can always cleanse or consecrate these types of crystals and gems with sacred sage smoke or by charging under an appropriate moon phase.

Jewelry is almost always anointed by witches, pagans, wiccans, spiritualists, healers, mediums and the like. We love our gemstones and the magic contained within earth’s precious minerals, so by anointing our gemstone jewelry, we empower and harness the magical energy of the gemstones to it’s highest potential. You can also wear your magic spell. Choose a gemstone jewelry piece that fits with your magical intent. Match that with a corresponding ritual oil. Anoint the piece and begin your magic!

Use in an Oil Burner: Allow the magical energies and magical vibrations to encompass your sacred space! Get one of those little oil diffusers and fill the diffuser cup 1/2 way up with water. Then add a few drops of your ritual spell oil or essential oil. Place a tea light in the bottom of the diffuser and enjoy the natural essences of magic flowing all around you.
