The Blue Blood Supermoon – January 31, 2018

There are Blue Moons, Blood Moons and Supermoons. But this January 31st we will bear witness and will have perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the tri-energy of a very rare Blue Blood Supermoon. The last time all three of these phenomenons lined up was back in 1866, 152 years ago.

At 5:26 am on the west coast and at 8:26 am on the east coast, the moon will reach its second full moon phase within the month of January making it a Blue Moon. The full moon also occurs very close to perigee, where the moon makes its closest approach to earth in its elliptical orbit, occurring close enough to create a Supermoon, making the moon 14% brighter than average.

Then, our mystical moon will fully slip into the earth’s shadow creating a total lunar eclipse. And while the moon is in the earth’s shadow, it will turn a beautiful light scarlet red color, hence, the Blood Moon. Weather permitting (fingers crossed), those of us on the west coast, Hawaii and in Alaska will have the best view of this rare and magical moon phase.

When and where you can see and experience a Blue Blood Supermoon also depends on where you are located because when the moon is completely full, sometimes it’s on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. This same moon phenomena actually happened back on December 30, 1982.
