Old European folklore depicts Krampus as Nikolaus’s shadowed dark servant, a horned and hairy supernatural beast whose pointy ears and long red slithering tongue gave misbehavers an awesome fright. As St. Nikolaus traveled from door to door handing out treats and gifts to those who had been on their good behavior all year long, those who behaved badly were dealt with by Krampus. Krampus, also known as the Devil Man, terrorized the bad until they promised to be good. Some he spanked, others he whipped, and some he shackled, stuffed into his large wooden basket and carted them away. From there Krampus hurled them into the fiery flames of hell.
